Tasty Winter Warmers

Date Posted:20 May 2014

Are you naturally reaching for a more sustaining breakfast that also warms you up?

Now that winter is arriving in our home we are turning to warmer breakfasts that help sustain us through the morning and are tasty too!

Here are two breakfast options for you to try…

Spicy Oat Porridge
Vata + Pitta  Balancing

Milk porridge with peaches and cherries

3/4 cup milk or milk alternative
3/4 cup water
1/8 cup raisins
1/3 cup oats
1/2 tsp finely cut ginger root
1/2 tsp cardamom powder
1/2 tsp cinnamon

Mix the oats and raisins with the water, add milk and bring to the boil. Add the rest of the ingredients. Let the cereal come to a bubbling boil again. Reduce to low heat, cover and let cook until good and mushy.

Note
For Pitta you may prefer to leave out the ginger root and reduce the cinnamon to 1/4 tsp.

If you are gluten intolerant please ensure that the oats you get are gluten free. Oats are gluten free but are sometimes stored with products containing gluten before packaging, which allows the gluten to transfer to the oats.

Digestive support
If hunger and digestion tends to be changeable take Digest Plus 1-2 tablets 15-30 minutes after breakfast and drink Vata Tea for an uplifting and calming morning cuppa!

Nutty Barley Porridge
Kapha + Pitta balancing

Barley porridge in a bowl

1/2 cup barley flakes
2/3 cup milk or milk alternatives
2/3 cup of water
2 Tbsp currants
½ tsp of dried ginger
1/4 tsp of cinnamon
1/4 t grated nutmeg 1 dstsp of sunflower seeds
1 dstsp of pumpkin seeds

Dry roast the barley in a pot until it browns slightly and smells nutty. Add water, milk, ginger and cinnamon, whisking briskly, then add currants.

Bring to a boil over a medium heat, stirring constantly. Reduce to a simmer and continue to stir frequently for another 5 minutes then serve sprinkled with seeds and nutmeg.

Note
For Pitta you may prefer to replace the ginger root with ½ tsp of cardamom powder, reduce the cinnamon to 1/4 tsp and nutmeg to a pinch.

Digestive Support
If you find your digestion is a bit…

Cold?
This is the time of year to take Digest Tone 1 tablet before meals and Agni Balance 1/3 tsp in a little hot water at the end of the meal. Aim to have 2-3 cups of Kapha tea during the day to help strengthen your digestion.

Sharp or intense?
During cold seasons nature compensates for the cold outside by increasing our internal thermostats, which can increase a sharp appetite or tendency for acidity. If this sounds like you then start your day with a drink of warm water with the juice of 1 lime, or juice of ½ lemon. After 30 minutes take a warm sustaining breakfast. After eating (15-30 minutes) take Digest Medium or if acidity is present Aci Balance.

Aim to have 3-4 cups of Pitta tea during the day to help regulate your internal thermostat to a comfortable level during winter.

Wishing you the bliss of perfect balance…
