Menopause - nature knows best

Date Posted:14 June 2012

Just as night follows day and summer follows spring, so too our body goes through cycles. Babies grow to be young girls, who become young woman able to bear children, and then around 35 years reproductive hormones begin to decline (perimenopause). Then around 45-55 years when reproductive hormones have completely declined menstruation ceases completely and menopause (pause of menstruation for a minimum of 1 year ) is considered established. Family support and an understanding partner are crucial to the ease of this transition for a woman.

How does Maharishi Ayurveda view Peri- Menopause and Menopause?

  • Nature knows best! Menopause is seen as a positive and nurturing midlife transition guided by the wisdom of nature to support health in later life. The intelligence residing within a woman’s physiology knows that reproduction later in life is too taxing and guides her reproductive hormones through a process of decline. As in all hormonal transitions (think of teenagers) this process includes periods of fluctuations as the new level of hormonal balance settles in.
  • Menopause Is not seen as a disease requiring drugs and ‘hormone replacement’ but as a normal natural transition that can be smooth and disease-free. Hearing this you may wonder why do hot flushes, fuzzy mind and poor memory, disturbed sleep, changing moods and other ‘menopausal symptoms’ arise so commonly at this time?
  • Perimenopause and menopausal is greatly influenced by how balanced your body is at the time. Underlying imbalances that have developed over time can become unmasked at this time as the hormonal balance shifts. If your body is well balanced then it will adjust quickly and symptoms will be minor. If your body is out of kilter then symptoms are likely to be more troublesome.

What to do?

From midlife onwards the balance of Pitta (fire) and Vata (wind) doshas guide this transformation accordingly. The choices a woman makes prior to and at this time of life greatly impacts her level of comfort or discomfort. Getting more sleep, moderate exercise, reducing stress, taking it easy, nourishing the body and mind with great food and herbal support (see below), and finding reasons to laugh more, are choices that can make a real difference. Adding a daily oil massage to the morning routine prior to shower or bath, does wonders to how one will feel through the day.

Midlife Balance – 3 Step Action Plan

Step 1 – Take 1-2 tablets of Vital Lady to strengthen the reproductive system and balance the hormonal flow; with 1-2 tablets of Energy Plus 30 minutes prior breakfast and evening meal. Have 2-3 cups of Smooth Cycle Tea daily.

Menstrual Difficulties? Replace Vital Lady with Rejuvenation for Ladies 1-2 tablets prior breakfast and evening meals. This formula is especially helpful during the years before menopause. It nourishes the blood, bones, and bone marrow, which have to be replenished constantly for an easy, natural menstrual cycle.

Step 2 – Reduce stress and free the spirit with daily practice of Transcendental Meditation. This helps to reduce stress, support inner strength and stability, aids mental clarity and inner peace and happiness.

Step 3 – Daily Oil Massage prior shower or bath using Vata or Pitta Massage Oils.

Step 1 – Take 1-2 tablets of Midlife For Women I to aid hormonal ease and Midlife For Women II to help smooth out those uncomfortable "side effects' of menopause. Take 30 minutes prior breakfast and evening meal. Have 2-3 cups of Golden Transition Tea daily.

Hot Flushes? Add Hot Flush Balance as needed and be sure to follow a Pitta pacifying diet.

This transition is inevitable and nature does know best! Following what the body is trying to do at this time is the best medicine. This is a time where Pitta dosha (fire and energy) is reducing and Vata dosha (wind and air) is increasing. The result of this transition is the need to manage your physical energy resources more carefully and to ensure the nervous system is adequately supported with good sleep and reduced stress. If not practicing Transcendental Meditation consider learning.
