Calm Mind Smooth Emotions

Have you been feeling a little ruffled and wondering what to do to calm your mind and feel more emotionally smooth?

Or is it more a longer term dissatisfaction with life that sits underneath your discontent?

No matter whether the mood or emotions have been dominating for a little while or a long while, Ayurveda explains that behind this mood of the mind and heart sits a deeper underlying imbalance.

The deeper imbalance is due to an imbalance of Vata, Pitta, Kapha dosha, or a combination of these doshas. You can know which of the doshas has become imbalanced by the mood and feelings that dominate.

 

Vata imbalance in the mind and mood
Vata Imbalance gives rise to fear, feeling anxious, worry and indecision. This crippling process undermines self confidence and can lead to difficulty going to sleep, difficulty remembering names or memory problems and a variety of other physical signs of Vata imbalance. Times of stress will increase these feelings and symptoms of imbalance.

What is good to know when this happens if Vata is strong in you by nature or imbalance,  is by addressing the underlying imbalance you can feel a whole lot better quite quickly.

Pitta imbalance in the mind and mood

Pitta imbalance gives rise to intensity and a driven perfectionist approach to life that can result in fits of anger, impatience, sarcasm and intolerance. As the fires in the body become overheated the liver, spleen and duodenum increase in heat causing the blood, heart and brain to overheat also.

The end result being an intense stare, intolerance off delays, impatience, anger with injustice or when things don’t go the way you want them to. And a feeling that your way is the right way… of course! This intensity can cause a Pitta person to burn out before the achieving their goals and create restless sleep and difficulty waking in the night. So if Pitta is strong in you by nature and you notice  an increase of  intensity with emotions boiling over, then it’s time to address the balance.

Kapha imbalance in the mind and emotions
Kapha imbalance takes a while to impact the mood of the mind and to ruffle the emotions of a Kapha dominant person. When imbalance increases it first causes sluggishness to arise in the body which can be experienced as low energy, dullness in the mind and lethargy.

With sustained pressure you may find yourself feeling stubborn, resorting to the familiarity of the known routines and turning to sweet and oily foods for comfort. As family and loved ones are central to your life feeling unsupported is stressful for you. When you notice feelings of being resistant, holding on to things or people (clutter increasing), stubbornness or resistance to change it is time to balance Kapha.
